LEGO rocks and LEGO blocks

So lately I’ve been coming across more and more LEGO-related stuff on the internet, and it’s really made me realize how much I absolutely love and miss LEGO. You might even say that there is a LEGO piece missing from my life…….. lame, I know.

It seems that in the time that LEGO has been absent from my life (around 12-14 years) the pieces and kits have gotten substantially cooler. Back in my day I played with LEGO pieces that looked like this:

If I was lucky, for Christmas I’d get a set which would make something like the pirate ship in the foreground of this shot:

But it seems that now everything is about a million times cooler. I mean even the basic sets look like this:

An X-Wing! You can get a kit to make an X-Wing! That is awesome. And that’s just the beginning.

A LEGO Star Destroyer, and you can get a kit for that. It took all my will power not to immediately whip out my credit card when I learned that such a thing existed.

Or you can step it up another notch and get the Millennium Falcon, which is over 33″ long. Sure it will cost you $679, but that’s small price to pay for the geek cred of having one of these on your bedside table. I hear the ladies love it too.

And just like with every other hobby, the internet has provided a fertile ground for LEGO-lovers to come to together and show off their stuff. Blogs like this one are dedicated to LEGO-related news, and the projects of various hobbyists. The truly hardcore do not merely purchase and build kits, they design and build their own stuff.

From something small like this:

To something huge like this:

And of course, in keeping with Rule 34 there is the shot below. Though I don’t know why spider-man is doing the filming.

And so, not only is LEGO not just for children anymore, but it would seem that a huge portion of their customers are now adults who may have gotten older, but never out grew their love of plastic blocks. I for one will now be checking the Lego Blog frequently and there is a good chance that there is a Tie-Fighter in my future.

  1. Picture credit it fine :-) BTW the Millennium Falcon is only $499.99 and also seen in my Flickr. The set is huge!!

  2. Welcome to the club, it’s fun to start building again and come out of the Dark Ages. Looking forward to see what you build.

  3. I don’t have many LEGO, but I like to see how creative people are with LEGO.
